Describe Sea as a Scent

Summer is upon us and that often means a visit to the sea - or ocean, depending upon where you live. I grew up with the scent of the sea not far from my nose. Living in England, it really isn’t that far from the sea wherever you lived. So, when I moved to Arizona - a land-locked state about 500 miles from the closest body of water that resembled the sea — people often asked me, “Don’t you miss the scent of the sea?” To my surprise, I didn’t. Instead I became accustomed to the scent of the mountains. But that’s an article for another day.

In this Describe *** as a Scent article, we are going to describe sea as a scent. Sea is not just one aroma - and it differs from place to place. Akin to the various botanical extracts from plants grown in different terroir.

So, kick back, and enjoy this journey to the sea, wherever you are located!

"The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.”

Jacques Yves Cousteau, French naval officer and oceanographer
