Rose: What Does it Mean in Perfumery?
The word rose is used in perfumery as a noun. Rose is one of the main building blocks of a fragrance as it’s so versatile and can hold literally every perfume creation together, whether it’s the main star of the show or such a subtle support that you don’t know it’s in there. Rose is a heart note in a fragrance.
Rosa damascena, Rosa centifolia, and Rosa bourboniana are just three types of rose used in fragrances, but the country of origin (and growing region) can alter the scent considerably. In addition, absolutes, CO2s, and essential oils vary considerably as well. Rose is also extracted as a hydrosol and can be used as a water-based fragrance spray.
Rose has special meaning to me this week as the very first episode of my joint podcast, the Aroma Paths Podcast Talk Show, with co-host Jennifer Pressimone of Jennscents, Inc. is launching on Thursday June 2oth and we chose to feature rose as our first subject! Here’s where you can find out more about rose:
Rose as an Ingredient in Brown-eyed Brooks
Finally, I just learned this morning that one of the pioneers in aromatherapy, Jeanne Rose, passed away yesterday. So, you could say, the universe seems to be directing us towards rose this week. Rest in aromatic peace, Jeanne Rose…
Drop me your thoughts and messages below on rose.
