All of my fragrances have a story. From the ingredients to the composition to the beginning. And I guess back to the beginning is where we should start.
When thinking about what kind of fragrance I wanted to create, I knew that I wanted it to be edgy and dark, but also a fragrance which would inspire the wearer to be bold, sassy, and confident. A fragrance which could be worn on a night out or for a luxuriating night in.
So where do you start with that?
Enter Louise Brooks from Side Stage Left
Way back in my college days, I dated an art student. Yes, a cliché, I know. But as part of a project, he studied the silent film actress Louise Brooks (1906-1985). I had not heard of Louise Brooks before that, but once I saw a photo of her, I wanted to be her! Her classic bob cut which was an iconic symbol of the 1920’s jazz age, mesmerized me, just as it has many women of that age. She was also free-spirited, went against the “norm” of societal expectations of the time – but was hugely successful as an actress, and Hollywood movie star, with her exotic good looks not harming her career.
Yet Louise Brooks was not your average Hollywood actress. Her name is not always immediately recognized such as those of Greta Garbo or Marlene Dietrich, also around at a similar time in history. Why is that?
